Tokyo 2026:
The NBA Returns
The Global Strategy
Market Penetration
With Japanese stars making significant impacts in the league, the NBA is leveraging local icons to drive viewership and merchandise sales. Tokyo serves as the primary hub for the league’s 2026-2030 Asian growth plan.
The “Home Game” Feel
The NBA plans to replicate the full “American Arena Experience” in Tokyo, including halftime shows, fan zones, and community outreach programs designed to inspire the next generation of Japanese ballers.
A Win for International Fans
The decision comes as part of a broader “Global Games” initiative which also includes stops in Paris, London, and Mexico City. By moving beyond preseason exhibitions, the NBA is proving that its international audience is ready for the “real deal.”
“The logistics of travel are challenging, but the rewards are undeniable,” Silver added. “We’ve seen the passion in the 2024 Olympics and the FIBA World Cup. Japan is ready.”
Ticketing Note:
Early registration for the Tokyo Games lottery is expected to begin in late 2025. Tickets are projected to sell out within minutes given the high demand.
